Katadyn Hiker Microfilter
There are a few of us around the office who bought the original Pur Hiker Microfilter when it came out in 1994 and we're still using the same model. A few of us even have the same filter, but filter performance depends largely upon water quality and consistent use of the prefilter attachment. MSR MiniWorks EX Water Filter Pump
Giardia lamblia and other nasty protozoan cysts don't vie for exclusive backcountry terrain. They're everywhere. Depending on where you hike or climb--especially if you're in popular destination areas like national parks--you'll probably encounter more tainted water sources than long-haul backpackers in remote regions. That's why MSR designed their MiniWorks EX specifically for day hikers. It's lighter, smaller and more versatile than most hydration packs. It's also more efficient than previous water filter designs. MSR added a new AirSpring Accumulator which improves the water pumping efficiency by about 45% or roughly a liter per minute. It works by trapping an air bubble inside the redesigned filter housing. This air bubble compresses on the down stroke to store energy then expands on the upstroke to push water further through the ceramic cartridge. Because the inside of the cartridge is under constant pressure, more water flows through in less time than other ceramic filter water pumps. That adds up to more break time during your breaks--which is a good thing at any altitude.
