Head Skis Monster IM 77 Ski
With a slightly narrower profile than the award-winning Head Monster IM 88 ski, the Monster IM 77 is a perfect transition platform for changing snow conditions that start the day fluffy and end with uniform hardpack boilerplate. This is a practical utility ski that can take terrain in any condition and features some of Head's best ski performance technology. Like other high-end Head skis, it features Intelligence Technology, a stability-enhancing group of "Intellifibres" inside the ski that uses torsion energy to filter out disruptive energy for added stability. It all might sound a little out there, but all you need to know is that the Intelligence Technology in the Monster IM 77 allows the ski to react instantly to sudden terrain changes (in about 5 milliseconds or so) so the ski adjusts to changing conditions when you're ripping from smooth cat tracks to broken crud. Another Head innovation found in the Monster IM 77 is Liquidmetal technology. While just about every ski manufacturer is adding titanium to their best skis, Head's Liquidmetal has a molecular structure that returns power at a ratio of 1:1, resulting in an improved ski rebound and improved turn initiation with roughly 29% more power than energy-absorbing titanium. If you can only take one ski with you for your 100-day big mountain season, Head's Monster IM 77 won't do you wrong--especially if you're an advanced skier seeking double-diamond challenges.

    Head Skis Mojo 90 Ski
Go big in the backcountry with a twin tip made to play off-piste. Head's Mojo 90 ski has a park profile with enlarged dimensions for better float in the powder and reliable stability for stomping big air landings. The carbon jacket design over the high density wood core combines the right amount of light swing weight with a platform that can take the abuse of blown moves and snow-covered boulders disguised as fluffy berms. The Chinese dragon motif was designed by 2005 World Superpipe Champion Jon Olsson--this is his signature model.

    K2 Women's Missdemeanor Ski
Why should the guys have all the best twin tips and killer rides in the park and pipe? K2 gets everything right this season with the award-winning Missdemeanor twin-tip ski. A top pick among ONLY eight women's skis recommended in the 2006 Powder Magazine Buyer's Guide issue, the Missdemeanor has female-specific dimensions and a BioFlex wood core that's lighter than K2's male-specific Public Enemy. This is an expert and advanced skier's dream date for high-flying adventures above hardpack terrain parks, but the Missdemeanor won't misbehave when you're out looking for a new flight outside the park and pipe--just don't push your luck too far in the deep powder because the 80-mm. waist won't give you much in terms of floatation.

    Line Skis Mothership Flite Ski
There are other award-winning skis for advanced and intermediate skiers available, but you'll be hard pressed to find the same quality and functionality for the price of Line's Mothership Flite ski. This lightweight powder ski claims freestyle roots, but folks (including the testers for the Powder Magazine 2006 Buyer's Guide) noted the all-terrain versatility. The big difference in enhanced versatility over last year's models is one of the best features found in new powder ski designs: The Quickmount Six Pack. It's a simple six-hole insert configuration that allows you to position the four-screw Line Quickmount binding system in two different locations that are spaced 43-mm. apart on the skis. This gives you more leverage, comfort and control in extremely deep powder conditions. The Mothership Flite ski also features a Carbon Ollieband along the poplar wood core that enhances the ski's lively pop through pre-stretched vertically laminated carbon fiber stringers--something you'll appreciate while busting through those untouched gladed runs long after the regular crowd has smashed everything down on the big open runs.
    Sku: 505001

    Line Skis Chronic Wide Ski
Line's most popular freestyle ski gained a little width along the waistline--and that's a healthy thing for any all-terrain rider who likes to transform the entire mountain into a terrain park. This new Chronic Wide has the durability for rails and hardpack with the width to manage untracked and light powder snow. Line built both the Chronic and Chronic Wide tough with a Fatty Base & Edge, construction that doubles the thickness of the edge and base to withstand miles of rail slides and high-impact missed hits. The extra reinforcement is built around a hard and wide Maple Macroblock core made from the highest quality wood material for skis. To keep things lively, Line laid down Carbon Ollieband along the poplar wood core to enhance the ski's lively pop through pre-stretched vertically laminated carbon fiber stringers. Whether you jump in the park or make your own play space in the backcountry, Line's Chronic Wide ski has the all-terrain geometry and pipe-ready durability to exceed your expectations--with a little extra width for play that sometimes goes out of bounds.
    Sku: 505013

    Line Skis Chronic Ski
The only thing that separates this Chronic ski from Line's all-terrain freestyle Chronic Wide is the narrower waist width. What you give up in potential all-terrain float comes back to you in the form of enhanced agility through turns and while skiing on hardpack snow. The Chronic is perfected for the park but it also does well in mountain ranges where the snow is usually packed more than it's powdered. Line built the Chronic and Chronic Wide tough with a Fatty Base & Edge, construction that doubles the thickness of the edge and base to withstand miles of rail slides and high-impact missed hits. The extra reinforcement is built around a hard Maple Macroblock made from the highest quality wood core material available. To keep things lively, Line laid down Carbon Ollieband along the poplar wood core to enhance the ski's lively pop through pre-stretched vertically laminated carbon fiber stringers. Whether you jump in the park or make your own play space in the backcountry, Line's Chronic ski has the all-terrain geometry and pipe-ready durability to exceed your expectations.

    Line Skis Invader Ski
No matter which end of Line's Invader ski that you butter, you'll do it in perfect balance. That's because this carefully engineered trick ski features a completely symmetric shape and flex with the stance centered over the middle of the ski. After a few dozen tricks you'll wonder how you ever got by on your old and unbalanced freestyle skis. Line also used a special Butter Zone Technology that thins the ski profile in front and behind the binding area to add extra flex from tip to tail. As the name suggests, the design change makes it incredibly easy to perfect your flatland jibs and other buttering moves. Along the base and edge you'll find Line's Fatty Base & Edge, a durable, high-impact approach that doubles the thickness of the edge and base to withstand miles of rail slides and missed hits on all sorts of unyielding ski park terrain--if that perfect symmetry ever throws you off balance.
    Sku: 505046

    Line Skis Women's Shadow Ski
It might be the female counterpart to Line's park-ready Chronic freestyle ski, but the Shadow has a lightweight Poplar Macroblock wood core that adds a female-specific flex and lively pop that most advanced women skiers won't find on unisex freestyle ride. Despite the light touch Line reinforced the base and edge with their Fatty Base & Edge, a durable, high-impact approach that doubles the thickness of the edge and base to withstand miles of rail slides and missed hits on all sorts of unyielding ski park terrain. Whether you're an aggressive intermediate who prefers to hang out in the park or an old-school expert looking for a female-specific ride that won't fall apart after a couple of weeks of hard play, Line's Shadow ski is a delight in any light.

Nordica Women's Olympia Victory Ski w/ XB 3.11 Ti Binding
Developed for advanced female skiers, Nordica designed their Olympia Victory Ski and attached XB 3.11 Binding for freeride performance in a mix of snow conditions. Before you write off the Olympia Victory Ski as the female counterpart to Nordica's male-oriented Hot Rod Nitrous Ski, consider this: The testers in Ski Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide gave the Olympia Victory Ski "high marks for floatation in the fluff" while they sank the Hot Rod Nitrous Ski sank in the deeps. While admittedly the testers were using a shorter version of the Hot Rod Nitrous, there's something to be said for the significantly lighter weight in the Olympia Victory Ski--and obviously that something is that you'll float no matter where you go. Skiing Magazine's 2006 Gear Guide also gave the ski high marks and a Testers' Choice award and applauded the fast, large-radius turn performance. Nordica's Olympia Victory Ski features the XBS Alu balance system, a patented, integrated balance-improvement profile that evenly distributes energy transmission from your foot over the largest ski sweet spot currently found on the market. This means that you can own an expert ski without owning a ski that's unforgiving and burdens you with marginal room for error. Despite the possibility of more second chances to stay upright, there's nothing soft about the Olympia Victory Ski. It has a 2V Active CA sidewall technology construction that delivers precise power transmission with exceptional acceleration and ultra-stable torsion control. And even if you can't stay upright, the Biometric toe piece in the integrated XB 3.11 binding helps give you more protection on a backwards-twisting fall than conventional ski binding designs. It's essentially the same binding as the Marker 11.0 Titanium Contact Control, but it features a special XB mounting plate specifically designed for the Olympia Victory Ski.

Nordica SUV 8.1 Ski w/ XB 3.10 Binding
Easy turns and predictable control instill confidence and quickly advance ski skills. It's a straightforward formula that makes Nordica's SUV 8.1 Ski and integrated Marker 3.10 Binding an easy choice for aggressive beginners and advancing intermediates. Created for skiers who spend around 80% of their ski day on groomed runs, the SUV 8.1 Ski is easy to turn and far more forgiving than conventionally-designed skis. Nordica's SUV 8.1 Ski features the X Balance system, a patented, integrated balance-improvement profile that evenly distributes energy transmission from your foot over the largest ski sweet spot currently found on the market. Nordica's AVT Top Sheet has a specific calibrated stiffness that absorbs more vibrations than any other Nordica top sheet, resulting in better control in varied snow conditions. The Marker 3.10 is the Nordica-specific equivalent of the M1000 Contact Control Binding, a two-piece heel design with a Biometric toe piece that enhances protection on a backwards-twisting fall. If making the most of your time on the snow matters, Nordica's SUV 8.1 Ski and integrated Marker 3.10 binding is your express ride to exceptional improvement.

Rossignol Zenith Z5 Oversize Ski w/ Axial 2 120 Ti Binding (Closeout)
The big difference between this award-winning Zenith Z5 Oversize and the other award-winning Zenith Z9 Oversize is the velocity, but unless you're a speed-crazed moron or a world cup contender looking for an extra second or two in the local skier cross competition, you're probably not going to care. That certainly was enough for Ski Magazine, who gave the Zenith Z5 Oversize high marks and a gold medal in their 2006 Buyer's Guide, but Billy O'Donnell, a tester for Skiing Magazine's 2006 Gear Guide summed it up best: "(It) lays over like a Moto GP bike in full turn. You'll have body parts brushing the snow for sure." While the Zenith Z9 Oversize blasts through short to long radius turns, this Zenith Z5 Oversize lives for the short to medium turns--it's an expert ski made for 90% of the experts and advanced skiers who go all over the mountain. Unlike the narrower-waist all mountain Rossignol Bandits of seasons long gone, the Zenith Z5 Oversize features a new Oversize sidecut for optimized power and control. Essentially it's wider along the waist to promote agility without leaving you skidding across hardpack corduroy.

    Rossignol Women's Saphir 100 Skis w/Saphir 100 Bindings
Made with better flex for easier control, Rossignol's Saphir 100 skis with integrated Saphir 100 Bindings are excellent for new and developing female skiers looking for smooth turns and easy transitions from edge to edge. One of the unique design features on the Saphir 100 is Rossignol's female-specific Lambda Concept (yeah, we thought it was Lambada the first time we read it, too). It's a plate beneath the binding areas that gives you more leverage in the front for easier turn initiation. The plate is split in the back and slightly ramped along the heel to enhance the overall balance through the turn. Between the plate and the ski surface is a Visco elastic material that dampens vibrations while adding more pressure to the ski tip and tail as the ski flexes. What this all means is that the ski turns easier with better control than many conventional designs--especially some of the beginner-oriented skis developed by other ski manufacturers.

    Rossignol Bandit B3 Ski
Crud is your bud if you're ripping it up on Rossignol's Bandit B3 ski. That's not to say that these skis won't float through those untracked gladed runs, but unlike some freeride/powder ski designs that do a few things well, Rossignol's B3 Ski adapts to a lot more varied conditions. Think of it as a wide-waist version of an all-mountain ski made for whispering through dry Colorado and Alberta snow--all day long. Rossignol replaced the Cut Away Tip on last year's B3 with a new Shark Nose, an aluminum insert inside the tip of the ski that enhances the torsional rigidity up front, giving you great control in the broken-up stuff (especially at those big mountain destinations like Whistler BC where everybody who is anybody insists on skiing to the bottom of the mountain after the lifts close). Special Visco components and an aluminum plate beneath the binding area further dampen vibrations through Rossignol's Free Absorber Technology (FAT). The result is a quiet and surprisingly smooth ride through anything the early powder hounds leave behind, or as the testers for Skiing Magazine's 2006 Gear Guide explained: It "sets a new paradigm for what a wide stick can accomplish in all conditions."
    Sku: 503081

    Rossignol Women's Bandit B2W Ski
It's more all-mountain than a lot of all-mountain skis. Designated as a 50% groomed, 50% off-piste ski, the award-winning Bandit B2W is a great choice for advanced and expert women skiers who cover the entire mountain in a day. Ski Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide pointed out the wide waist design that pummels powder and crud snow with superb control. Like previous Bandit incarnations, the B2W likes to go fast, which makes it a big draw among adventure seekers. If there's a downside, the waist and high-speed-oriented dampening that gives the Bandit B2W its smooth ride may not be lively enough for those who play in the moguls. Like Rossignol's other female-specific skies, the Bandit B2W has unique construction that's 15% softer and lighter than many unisex ski designs, so you don't have to push as hard to get where you want to go. Rossignol also moved the binding mount position a centimeter forward, resulting in easier turn initiation, which could add up to more energy at the end of the day for partying throughout the night.
    Sku: 503138

    Rossignol Scratch Mogul Ski
Whether you're going big in bump competition or you're looking for fun among the moguls, Rossignol's Scratch Mogul Ski is the freestyle platform of choice. It features some of the same design components found in their award-winning terrain park and backcountry freestyle skis, but the dimensions are narrower for easier and quicker turning in the bumps. Like all Rossignol Scratch ski models, the Scratch Mogul ski has a softer flex along the tips with plenty of stiffness over the middle binding area. This "Rocking Chair Effect" (RCE) lets you load up the tips and tails for more spring and bigger boosts off a pipe, berm or big bump. A 30-degree slanted sidewall enhances the swing weight for more lift with less effort. Start your conditioning and leg stretching--this season is going to be fun.
    Sku: 503157

    Rossignol Scratch Sprayer BC Ski
Go big beyond the boundary lines on Rossignol's Scratch Sprayer BC skis. Because it has narrower dimensions than the more expensive Scratch BC, it's better suited for hardpack terrain, but this profile is still best suited off the groomed runs. Like all Rossignol Scratch ski models, the Scratch Sprayer BC has a softer flex along the tips with plenty of stiffness over the middle binding area. This "Rocking Chair Effect" (RCE) lets you load up the tips and tails for more spring and bigger boosts off a pipe or berm. A 30-degree slanted sidewall enhances the swing weight for more lift with less effort.

Salomon Scrambler Hot Pilot Ski w/ S912 Ti Binding
Some ski manufacturers focus on the sidecut design in all-terrain skis. Salomon emphasized weight distribution through a Spaceframe monocoque double wall construction in their Scrambler Hot all-mountain ski with integrated S912 Ti Binding. What this does is place the right amount of dense material where you need the vibration dampening and all the light components for excellent swing weight, precision and edge grip. Skiing Magazine's 2006 Gear Guide testers where caught off guard: "We knew it would float well, but the relatively fat Hot surprised us by earning top marks maneuverability." The mid-fat width busts crud and rips light powder without skidding too far on cast iron corduroy groomers. If you're an advanced skier looking for a ski that goes anywhere on the mountain, Salomon's Hot Ski with integrated S912 Ti Binding is a top performer.
    Sku: 504002

    Salomon Teneighty Gun Ski
If you do your best moves in a powder playground, Salomon's Teneighty Gun is loaded with freeride potential. The design has a few elements left over from the critically-acclaimed Pocket Rocket series, but this is essentially a high-flying freestyle ski made for big backcountry powder in places like Canada and the Rocky Mountain States. Testers for Ski Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide issue lauded the purity of the powder ski profile, but noted that the Teneighty isn't the best choice for hardpack surfaces and groomed corduroy. While the Salomon Teneighty Gun utilizes the same proven Spaceframe construction and side cut dimensions, Salomon tweaked it at the core, replacing the power foam polyurethane with an new Isocell complex core that dampens with slightly better rebound (although again, some testers find a lively ski light and playful, others think it's on the verge of skidding out of control). If you're a powder hound looking for an expert-level companion, Salomon's Teneighty Gun ski is the right stuff. Check out Salomon's precision S912 Ti 95 Binding for a match made for steep and deep heaven.
    Sku: 504062

    Salomon Teneighty Flyer Ski
Kids should have all the fun. Sometimes that's a little tough, especially if your skier is more into playing in the park and above the pipe than doing anything on a race circuit. Salomon's Teneighty Flyer Ski is a lightweight solution that doesn't dumb down any of the features and functionality found on the bigger and longer Teneighty Foil and Teneighty Thruster skis. The lightweight profile and Isocell complex core has a moderate waist that should provide enough float for most skiers (body weight is a factor) with plenty of pop for launching off lips, berms and other launch pads. It's more huck for the buck than any of those youth race-specific skis, and your kid might respect your judgment for once. Then again, probably not.

Volkl Supersport Allstar Ski w/Motion IPT PCOS Binding
Built for the best riders who like to go fast in a variety of snow and terrain conditions, Volkl's Supersport Allstar ski with Integrated Marker Motion IPT P.C.O.S. bindings is designed for the highest levels of skiing performance. The testers for the 2006 Skiing Magazine Gear Guide summed it up best when they slapped this lean and mean carving machine with their highest Best in Test Award: "Capable of all turn shapes at all speeds; it's a race ski without a race ski disposition." Like many of Volkl's top-end performance skis, the Allstar ski has a tip-to-tail Sensorwood core and wood sidewalls for flex. Unlike some ski manufacturers who contract core work to third party companies, Volkl produces their own wood core to optimize quality and consistency in design with CNC precision. The Superstar Allstar also has an Extended double-grip technology that goes beyond doubling the height of the construction above the ski edge to enhance skier support and grip through varying high-speed turn arcs. Included with this Allstar ski is Marker's Motion IPT binding with P.C.O.S. The IPT means "Internal Power Transmission," a redesigned and lightened binding profile that produces easier flex with a rounded profile for better carving. The P.C.O.S. stands for "Piston Control Oil Suspension" and features a special interface equipped with a hydraulic oil piston that delivers amazing flex and control between the boot, binding and ski. The result is a quieter and smoother ride with barely any vibrations or unsettling oscillations. Like previous Volkl Star-series models, the binding still slides on aluminum motion rails using two carbon steel pins--one in front and one in back--to glide your boots over bumps and through undulations with complete flex and uninterrupted power transmission. The result is an exceptional package that runs like a race ski with the potential for going far beyond groomed runs.

Volkl Women's Attiva 4 Star Ski w/ Motion LTES Binding
Made to go fast in a range of snow conditions, Volkl's Attiva 4 Star ski with Integrated Marker Motion LT Easy Step Bindings is an exceptional all-mountain platform for advanced and expert female skiers looking for a performance edge without unisex design compromises. Developed with a new female-specific design, all Volkl Attiva series skis have the tip moved forward further than unisex skis for easier turn initiation and smoother transitions through the fall line. Attiva skis also feature a minimized tip height to help reduce the ski swing weight, resulting in better control in all snow conditions. Volkl refined their Double Grip technology for the Attiva 4 Star with a lightweight design that essentially doubles the height of the construction above the ski edge to enhance skier support and grip without adding extra ounces in the tradeoff. Another practical design enhancement is a special 20/20 core for women. The 20/20 core construction is 20% lighter and 20% softer than Volkl's unisex ski designs so it turns faster and easier on a range of terrain. Included with this Attiva 4 Star ski is Marker's Motion LT Easy Step binding, a lightweight, rail-mounted ski binding with the same heel piece found on Marker's high-end Titanium 12.0 Binding. The binding glides along on a single pin for easy power transmission between your boot and ski that doesn't compromise flex through the turns. This integrated binding profile helps keep the Attiva 4 Star in contact with the snow over bumps and other undulations while giving you more control than traditional ski/binding interfaces.

    Volkl Dogen Ski
Made to fly in the pipe and all over the park, the Volkl Dogen balances a durable design with a lightweight and lively construction. Like other skis in the Volkl freeride series, the Dogen ski has a tip-to-tail Sensorwood core and wood sidewalls for flex. Unlike some ski manufacturers who contract core work to third party companies, Volkl produces their own wood core to optimize quality and consistency in design with CNC precision. Volkl balanced this agile core profile with their Power Construction design to keep you completely in control wherever you need to go. If you jib all day and prefer to flip over the lips of berms and pipes, Volkl's Dogen ski will treat you right.
    Sku: 502415

    Volkl Women's Queen Attiva Ski
Ski Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide didn't have a gold-medal category for women's deep powder skis, but Volkl's Queen Attiva Ski did garner a mention among four choices for easy turning in the white fluff. The big difference that separates the Queen Attiva from unisex powder planks is the female-specific design. All Volkl Attiva series skis have the tip moved forward further than unisex skis for easier turn initiation and smoother transitions through the fall line. Attiva skis also feature a minimized tip height to help reduce the ski swing weight, resulting in better control in all snow conditions. Another practical design enhancement is a special 20/20 core for women. The 20/20 core construction is 20% lighter and 20% softer than Volkl's unisex ski designs so it turns faster and easier on any powder run. Combine the lightweight profile with the wide waist and you have something special for floating above the powder without sinking or feeling exhausted after a dozen runs.
    Sku: 502522

    Volkl Sanouk Ski
If you don't need the twin-tip styling (or leather topsheet) on Volkl's Sumo, the longer-length Sanouk is your ideal backcountry powder ski for advanced and expert terrain. Volkl's refined swallowtail design won huge accolades in Powder Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide for its exceptional turning speed. Like other skis in the Volkl freeride series, the Sanouk ski has a tip-to-tail Sensorwood core and wood sidewalls for flex. Unlike some ski manufacturers who contract core work to third party companies, Volkl produces their own wood core to optimize quality and consistency in design with CNC precision. Volkl balanced this agile core profile with their Power Construction design to keep you completely in control wherever you need to go. In fairness to Powder Magazine, a reviewer mentioned that the factory mounting point might sit too far back for some skier preferences, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue if you're already predisposed to tilting back a little while riding through knee-deep bliss.
    Sku: 502544

    Volkl Sumo Ski
Go bigger than all the rest on the leather-topped Sumo ski from Volkl. Designed to surf the deepest of powder turfs, the Sumo has the widest waist of any ski made by Volkl, making it your twin-tip ski of choice for the days after dumps and big heli-ski adventures. We're not done checking our stats, but unofficially the Sumo looks like one of the widest twin-tips on the market--by centimeters. The only thing that comes close is the wider Line Prophet 130, but there's a bit more length and swing weight there. Like other skis in the Volkl freeride series, the Sumo ski has a tip-to-tail Sensorwood core and wood sidewalls for flex. Unlike some ski manufacturers who contract core work to third party companies, Volkl produces their own wood core to optimize quality and consistency in design with CNC precision. Volkl balanced this agile core profile with their Power Construction design to keep you completely in control wherever you need to go--provided that it's not hardpack or corduroy. The Sumo's ultra-wide design isn't exactly ideal for anything resembling a carved turn.
    Sku: 502533

    Volkl Dragon Slayer Ski
Contrary to what most people think, there's never a bad day for bump runs--especially when you consider that a huge majority of the sunny Saturday afternoon crowd treats the stuff like a thirty-foot cliff drop: They just don't go there. The trouble is that as more ski manufacturers cater to the all-mountain and terrain park masses, the mogul masters are stuck looking for design compromises. That's not the case with Volkl's bump-oriented Dragon Slayer. This is all about mogul mastery for both competition and recreation. Like the wider Volkl freeride skis, the Dragon Slayer ski has a tip-to-tail Sensorwood core and wood sidewalls for flex. Unlike some ski manufacturers who contract core work to third party companies, Volkl produces their own wood core to optimize quality and consistency in design with CNC precision. Volkl balanced this agile core profile with their Power Construction design to keep you completely in control wherever you need to go.

    K2 Apache Outlaw Skis
We didn't overlook the experts-oriented K2 Apache Outlaw ski this season, but considering all the wide body powder ski offerings from practically every ski manufacturer in the market, the Apache Outlaw probably didn't get the attention it deserved, even after picking up a gold medal from Ski Magazine's 2005-06 Buyer's Guide. That minor oversight is a huge cost-savings advantage for you because the Apache Outlaw remains one of the best combinations for float and maneuverability you'll find for the big powder backcountry. The trait that won Ski Magazine reviewers over in Snowbird blew us away in the mountains behind Blackcomb in Whistler. Nearly every big powder ski uses a wood core reinforced with metal, but K2 came up with a perforated metal layering system that keeps the Apache Outlaw nimble and stable without making you feel like you're mired in snow on heavy planks. If you blast between untouched powder and broken crud (we do--but that's because we usually sleep in on powder mornings) then the Apache Outlaw is right for your style of backcountry fun. If you mix your first tracks with established inbound runs, K2's Mod Technology will help dampen vibration and minimize ski chatter while you're at speed. K2 compares Mod Technology to shock absorbers in an off-road car--as an "elastomeric secondary core" (their term) the Mod Monic device improves the Outlaw's contact with the snow and crud, so you are more apt to initiate turns exactly where you need to most. If you're looking for a big floater powder ski for expert backcountry stuff, but you don't want to wrestle your way through every turn with a heavy platform, the K2 Apache Outlaw is the perfect solution; and at this closeout price it won't be overlooked by savvy expert skiers.

K2 Apache Recon Skis with Ti 12.0 IBX PC Binding
All mountain skis are essential performance platforms for skiers who want to cover all sides of the mountain on the same day. Few versatile ski designs do the job better than K2's Apache Recon skis. It's no small feat that K2's Apache Recon came out on top with a gold medal award in Ski Magazine's All-Mountain Expert category for two consecutive years. The Apache Recon also topped all of the other skis in Skiing Magazine's Gear Guide (Best in Test award--better than all Testers' Choice award winners for category) in their All Terrain Expert category. If you prefer taking one do-it-all ski on vacation, you'll be happy to know that this was the ski that packed up the Testers' Choice award for Skiing Magazine's One-Ski Quiver category. What makes the K2 Apache Recon so good is an integrated binding ski design using the Marker Piston Control Ti 12.0 IBX binding. The Marker Piston Control Ti IBX 12 binding has a Piston Control interface equipped with a hydraulic oil piston that delivers superb flex and control between the boot, binding and ski. The result is a quiet and smooth ride that minimizes vibrations and unsettling oscillations. Unlike many binding designs that use a slick plastic or Teflon AFD toe plate, the Marker AFD plate has a gliding, stainless steel construction that facilitates boot exit during backward twisting falls. The stainless steel design has a clear advantage: It resists dirt, abrasion and temperature changes far better than Teflon and plastic AFD bindings over the long haul for consistent performance that lasts through multiple seasons. If all this wasn't enough, we have this killer combo priced to move at a remarkable closeout price. There is one important consideration--the binding plate is included for the Marker Piston Control Ti 12.0 IBX binding, but it's not installed. The reason is that some advanced skiers prefer the plate but some experts don't like the added elevation below their ski boots. If you decide that you want to install the included binding plate, consider asking a local ski shop to install it for you.

K2 T:Nine Burnin' Luv Skis with M11.0 Ti CC SLX Binding
If there's one expensive drawback to skiing, it's the high cost of specialization--but that isn't the case with these versatile and closeout-priced K2 T:Nine Burnin' Luv skis with Marker M11.0 Ti CC SLX bindings. The award-winning K2 T:Nine Burnin' Luv with Marker M11.0 Ti CC SLX bindings is one of those rare performance anomalies that does everything right for many skiers. While K2 designed the T:Nine Burnin' Luv for advanced and expert skiers, the testers in Ski Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide gave the ski exceptionally high marks in the forgiveness category. Granted, speed-fearing beginners are probably not a good match here, but there's plenty of performance potential for aggressive intermediates looking for a dependable ride to black diamond and double-diamond wonderlands. While K2 generally uses their Mod Technology for vibration dampening over wide areas, the T:Nine Burnin' Luv has Mod Monic Technology, a precision feature that focuses the dampening in specific areas on the ski without diluting the performance potential. Unlike the heavier men's skis with Mod Monic Technology, the T:Nine Burnin' Luv Mod Monic is specifically matched to the lighter female-specific BioFlex wood core so it's 40% lighter. This T:Nine Burnin' Luv features a freeriding-oriented Marker M11.0 Ti CC SLX binding with a Contact Control (CC) component that uses an integrated elastomer that adjusts to the ski flex. This helps you deliver power evenly to the ski even through bumps or uneven surfaces. Over time you may notice that the improved leverage also makes turn initiation easier with less fatigue. Best of all, this combo is a complete package deal that does well as an all-mountain ski, although intermediates may need some time getting used to the learning curve on busting up crud beyond the groomed runs. If you're looking for a women's ski that does a lot of things well for a range of skiing abilities, this should be your first Luv.

Salomon Scrambler 8 Ski w/ Pilot S810 Binding (Closeout)
Great for aggressive skiers who like to take on all sides of the mountain, the affordable Scrambler 8 Ski with integrated S810 binding offers award-winning performance at a one-time discount closeout price. Ski Magazine's 2006 Buyer's Guide gave it a Gold Medal in their All-Mountain Aspiring Expert category for its easy handling on varied and challenging snow surfaces, noting that the midfat waist gives the Scrambler 8 ski more floatation above the deep without sacrificing easy turns through the steep. Whether you're a new skier looking for better performance from mid-level skis or you're an advanced skier seeking a comfortable and predictable ride, Salomon's Scrambler 8 is a smart and highly affordable choice. It comes with an integrated Salomon Pilot S810 B80 sport binding with Oversize Spheric technology for a precise boot hold. The diagonal pivot driver toe optimizes performance and confidence at high speeds on challenging terrain. Keep in mind that the DIN scale settings are 3-10 for skiers up to 235 lbs., so if you think you'll be racing in top tier competition, you may need a ski/binding pairing with higher DIN settings. For mere mortals on a budget, Salomon's Scrambler 8 and Pilot S810 should be everything anyone will need for every ski day throughout the season.
