    Choosing the right treadmill

    Here are a few things to consider when purchasing a treadmill. First, weigh yourself. You need to know how much you weigh because some treadmills have low weight limits under 300 pounds. Most of the more expensive treadmills have higher max weight limits, however most are not over 400 pounds.

    Next, consider how fast or slow you want to go on your treadmill. Generally speaking, the faster the treadmill, the more expensive the cost. If you're just looking for a treadmill to walk on and don't require a high weight limit, you don't need to spend a lot of money. Then again, there is more to the cost than just speed. For example, the first few treadmills we have listed on the page below are made by Smooth Fitness and feature top notch construction and the best in treadmill comfort offering enhancements such as good shock absorbtion for your legs and knees; this ultimately translates into a more comfortable and more enjoyable workout that you're likely to want to do more often. If you workout on a $300 treadmill and then try one of the Smooth Treadmills, you will notice the difference right away. Be sure that the treadmill you buy will go as slow as you want it to go (and as fast). Some treadmill motors will not allow you to go below a certain speed as it is too hard on the motor. Most quality treadmills sold today max out at 10 MPH and have a range of about 0.5 to 10 MPH, but this may vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. How fast is 10 MPH? Is it fast enough? Yes!, you may only want to go faster if you are a professional runner or triathlete. Not only do the treadmills have speed limits but most have the ability to incline making the speed fill like more than it actually is. The incline of treadmills may not look or feel like much when you're just standing on one that isn't moving, but try running on an inclined treadmill at 10 MPH or even 7 MPH, even if you are in excellent shape, a 7 MPH run on a fully inclined treadmill is one tough workout. We highly recommend that you look for treadmills with incline as this feature can take your workouts to new levels and will work your body and muscles much harder and in different ways than just a flat treadmill.

    If you plan to run on your treadmill, be sure to get one with a wider belt width. It is sometimes difficult for people, especially while running fast, to hold a straight line on a tradmill. Having a wider belt will allow more room for error should your foot get slightly out of alignment from the centerline of the treadmill.

    Next, consider safety features, console design and convenient enhancements the treadmills. Most modern treadmills come with a magnetic key that you place on the console to turn it on. A lanyard is attached to the key which you clip onto your clothing. This way if things get to tough and you overdo it, or can't keep up, or fall down, the magnet will release from the console and the treadmill will automatically shut off. Look for a console with an easy to use design, preferably one with a spot to hold a bottle of water to help you keep hydrated while working out and one that has speeds that can easily and rapidly be changed, it is annoying to have to increase the speed by 0.1 increments if you want to jump from 2 MPH to 8 MPH, it is also a matter of safety to be able to rapidly decrease the speed should you overdo it at high speed and need to some down quickly. We like treadmills that offer large buttons, one for each MPH setting so that the speed can be easily adjusted. Make sure the buttons are large enough, if you're running along at 10 or even 7 MPH, it can be troubling to try to hit a small button on the console when you're bobbing up and down trying to run. Make sure the handles are in a comfortable location and position and a heart rate moniter is also nice; many treadmills have this built into the handles so you can test your heart rate at any time. Another feature we love on treadmills is automatic programs. These programs will automatically adjust the speed and incline within a certain range that you can specify. A LED readout will show you the progress and intensity and intensity path of the program. These programs will get your heart rate up and then allow you to cool down a bit and then work you out again, etc.

    Lastly, don't forget about the warranty. Some treadmills come with warranties as short as 90 days. This is another reason why we like Smooth treadmills, they have a lifetime warranty. See the models below for yourself.
