Get a map of the area. I recommend:
Thomas Guide 2003 San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
This map provides excellent coverage of the National Forest roads and other roads in the area.
Take Hwy 173 to Torrey Rd to 2N25 (Rouse Ranch Rd) to 3N34 (Squint Ranch Rd) and make a right. Now there is this steep paved section of road. Go to Pacific Crest Trail trailhead and parking lot near Deep Creek.
Alternatively, a shorter way there, which was closed last time I visited, is to take Highway 173 to Hook Creek Rd, and take Hook Creek Rd. to the PCT trailhead. |

Hike easterly on PCT (away from deep creek, toward Holcomb Creek).
This part of the Pacific Crest Trail starts out cool, there is a cool bridge and Deep Creek is always an awesome place to be, especially in this forested area. But then you get out there and it's all burned up from the Willow Fire, and then it pretty much sucks; I mean it's still ok, but it's just kind of disgusting because the fire ruined so many good areas. |

I wore an new pair of boots on this hike and paid for it. We were going to cut off the trail and hike up to what I think is Craft's Peak which looked to be quite a ways away, but I had this killer blister so we turned around, drove down Hwy 173 to Bradford Ridge Trail and hiked into Deep Creek Hot Springs (Hike 11). |
