Driving Directions
Take I-15 to the 138 exit. Head west on Hwy 138 towards Wrightwood. Make a left onto Hwy 2 and continue on Hwy 2 pass Wrightwood. Continue on Hwy 2 to the large parking lot at Inspiration Point. Here, make a left onto Blue Ridge Road. The sign says 6 miles to Guffy. At the entrance to Guffy Campground is a locked gate to the right. Go up to the campground and park. There is a place to park on the right side of the road just as the campground loop begins. Start hiking down the road that had the locked gate.
Route
From Guffy, I rode my bike 2 miles down the road to the trailhead at the entrance to the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. This saved a few minutes of hiking time and gave me some wheels to get off my feet when I got back. At the trail head, start hiking up Pine Mountain, continue on the trail to Dawson Peak, then Mount Baldy. Return the same way.
Details
This was a beautiful hike and a great day. I got started early at 5:30am, before sunrise. The sun rose just as I got to the foot trail. I was on top of Pine Mountain at 6:50am, Dawson Peak at 7:30am, Mount Baldy at 8:45am. I left Baldy at 9:15am, arrived back at Dawson peak at 10:00am, Pine Mountain at 10:30am. Left Pine Mountain at 11:00am, back at my bike at 11:30am and my truck at 11:45am.

I was lucky to see about 4 bighorn sheep on the NE flank of Mt. Baldy. I was maybe 150 feet away from them. They did not take their eyes off me.
Trail Condition
The trail is quite steep in many places and not well traveled or maintained.
Forest Details
Mostly Jeffery and Lodgepole Pine at higher elevations. Stunted growth on the side of Mt Baldy.
Notes about this hike report
This trail is one of my favorites in the San Gabriels because it is seldom traveled, is a good workout, and I've seen Bighorn sheep both times I've taken it to Mt Baldy.

Scott and Augie showed up at Inspiration Point right about 7:30am. Started hiking at about 8:15am. Reached the trailhead to pine at about 8:55am, top of Pine Mtn at 9:45am, top of Dawson Peak at 10:20am, top of Mt Baldy at 11:40am, back to Guffy at about 2:30pm.

Apparently it was the first day of huntin season er somethin. All these folks strapped up with guns romin the hills shootin nothin but themselves. Didn't see no deer out there, didn't see no sheep neither, no bears, no snakes, no ticks, no bees, no ants, no flies, no nothin. Pretty uneventful. Nice day though, weather was real nice for October. Almost nowhere to park though cause all them damn hunters took up pretty much every imagineable parkin spot. Scott parked in what appeared to be a well used parkin spot at Guffy and got a damn ticket. That was ridiculous. We done sawed a few folks along the trail including a 67-year old woman hiking from Manker flats to Baldy, Dawson, and Pine and back.

We had a good group though. The three of us. We all stayed within range durning the hike. Kept up a good pace too. Anymore than about 6 people on this hike would be too much.

This trail is still my favorite in the San Gabriels. Today was the first day I've ever seen anybody else out there and the fifth time I've been out there... it is not well traveled. Up Pine and Baldy the trail is nice and steep, no bullshit.
