Driving Directions
From I-15, take Hwy 18 east to Hwy 38 and continue to Fawnskin. The speed limit will eventually slow to 25 mph. After this, be looking for the large Fawn Lodge on your right. Turn right on Navajo & park behind the Fawn Lodge (very much out of business).
Route
Ride out of the Fawn Lodge to Rim of the World Dr (3N14) and take it all the way to Big Pine Flat. At Big Pine Flat (~7 miles), make a right onto 3N16, take it to 3N12 (~14 miles), make a right. Ride up to the side of Delamar Mountain, pass the Delamar Mountain spring which runs into the road and continue to 3N14, left 1/2 mile to 2N68 right, continue on 2N68 to 2N13C, take it to Butler Peak Lookout, or follow lookout tower signs, hike up short trail to the fire lookout tower and then return to Fawnskin.
Details
Temp Range: 74-96F; Starting on 3N14, there was a bunch of road construction, but that was cool because they were using huge backhoes. First 1.5 miles is uphill, then there is a few miles downhill, then uphill to Big Pine Flat. 3N16 is uphill for what seems like a long time, on the left (north) side of the road, you can see the Willow Fire Damage and the whole area is closed. Finally there's a nice downhill section. Then when you meet 3N12, it's up again, but the climb seems pretty short along the side of Delamar Mountain. It's fun downhill down the Mountain. Back to 3N14 I went right to this section of road that AAA map labels 2N68, but it's a private road, so I took 2N01X a little ways, but it seemed like it was going way downhill(I later learned that it's just a loop then ends up back at 3N14), so I turned around after about a mile and took 3N14 back to 2N68, which I didn't see it as being labeled. It climbed to 2N13C which climbed a whole lot more and finally I was at Butler Peak and the view is incredible, it made the whole ride worth it, and there are some very beautiful sections of road as you're climbing up. View: Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Silverwood Lake, El Mirage Dry Lake, San Gabriels, High Desert, the 10,000ft ridge and San Gorgonio, Sugarloaf Mtn, Willow Fire Damage. Then I was going to ride back to my truck and drive over to the Mill Creek area and ride to the champion lodgepole pine but I was pretty tired, it was so hot climbing up to Butler Peak. And the tower is awesome the way it is at the top of the rocks up there. I carried my bike up the trail to the tower, there were 3 volunteers there and the sign below says only 4 people are supposed to be up there at a time. This was really too hot of a day to do any of this ride.
Trail Condition
Forest roads all the way. Makes for a nice ride.
