Route
Ride Arrowhead Lake Road south to Highway 173. Make a left and ride up, 1 mile paved, then 5 miles dirt. At Grass Valley Road, the highway is closed with temporary gates. Signs say do not enter. Beyond the gate, there are some slide areas where half of the Highway had gone down the hillside. This probably won't be fixed for a while, there's some major damage out here in a few spots, pleanty of trees down too. The other gate is just before you get to the first residential road on your right, Arbon I think it is. Stay on 173 and ride into Lake Arrowhead. I went to the Lake Arrowhead village and walked around there for a while. Then just road around some random residential strees. There are some steep hills around there. Then I road back on 173 and swung by the "art and wHine" festival, then back down the same way.
Details
Great day for a ride. Saw a highway patrol at the closed portion of Hwy 173 on the way back down, so I road up to Grass Valley Road on Matterhorn Dr and took that down. Highway 173 to Arbon Ln, left on Voltaire Dr 1 block, right on North Bay Road, 1 block to a left on Matterhorn Dr a ways to Grass Valley Rd and a right back to Hwy 173.

Only about 10 miles of this ride was offroad. Downhill traffic on Hwy 173 is not as crowded as usual because of the closure up top. It's like it was years ago, real nice.

Average Speed (Ride and Walk combined): 10.8 MPH
Distance 2: 338.28 Miles
Start time: 8:15 am
End time: 2:30 pm
28 minutes from my house to bottom of unpaved section of Hwy 173
83 minutes from my house to cattle grate on top of old unpaved section of Hwy 173
89 minutes from my house to ranger station near Pilot Rock Rd on Hwy 173.
About 110 minutes +/- from my house to Willow Creek Rd by the UCLA conference center on Hwy 173.
Notes about this ride report
MTB seems to be getting more popular, saw 5 others today. Lots of MTB tracks on the closed section of Hwy 173.
